“You can't hate it unless you love it.” - The Last Black Man in San Francisco
I knew that I really wanted to create an illustration based on this earlier year’s independent movie - The Last Black Man in San Francisco, distributed by A24 . It was shot incredibly beautifully. I was living in this city for almost a year; some of the streets and scenes I actually have been to. I enjoyed every moment and the score. It reminds me of a lot of Wayne Thiebaud’s SF paintings. Here is a specific wide shot that appears repeatedly Jimmie on the way skateboarding from the hill down the street to the house (dream) he loves.
The aesthetics of the movie are stunning, and the story is very emotional - about the effects of gentrification in the city where you grew up. The movie reflects my own mixed feelings of my hometown, friendships, childhood memories, growth, and being an outsider every time I go back.
